The Benefits of Alternative Energy
Alternative energy, or renewable energy, is defined as solar, wind, or water sourced energy. Alternative energy is considered to supplement traditional fossil-fuel sources such as coal, oil, and natural gas. Nuclear energy is also technically an alternative energy, but it is not generally considered as one due to the production of radioactive waste and other harmful byproducts.
The biggest advantage to renewable energy is that they don’t harm the environment. When it comes to relying on power from the sun, water, or wind, the energy is renewable and produces no harmful byproducts. These renewable energy sources can be easily used to turn turbines and thus replace oil, natural gas, and other fossil fuels. As for wind and solar energy, the technology related to reaping energy out of these is still in the development phase. Unfortunately, the investment to research these energy technologies is significant. However, once the technology is perfected, these sources will prove to be the most cost effective.
There are some drawbacks to alternative energy, however. For example, wind power can only be used in certain geographic areas that have enough wind to make the technology viable. Hydro-electricity can only be used near water sources that have enough volume and flow. Solar energy, however, seems to be the most universal as the sun shines everywhere (exceptions at the extreme north and south poles must be considered, of course).
